Gyanyoga, Pranayam & Mudras

Gyan yoga is the yoga of understanding, of understanding your body, your mind and yourself.
This requires you to to be aware and alert through the process. This yoga is very gentle but very powerful and can be done by anyone irrespective of their age or physical condition.

Gyan  Yoga consists of Breathing exercises (Pranayam), postures to help restore bodily functions and flexibility (Asanas), and finger positions to help you rectify and channel energies (mudras). There are 108,000 yogic asanas, each appropriate for some people depending on their age, health problems and requirements for healing. I personally choose those postures which are appropriate for each of you. (All asanas are not suitable for all people).

Yoga acts by regulating the breathing and by holding certain postures for various lengths of time, to alter and regulate the energy flows, lymphatic and blood flows to various organs. This keeps the body supple and helps maintain good health.  This makes it very useful in rehabilitation and for prevention of deformities which may follow injuries or illness. It also promotes a quicker return to normal function than what would be expected by conventional means. As we may be able to predict which individuals are prone to joint disorders it can be used to prevent them.

I conduct Therapeutic Yoga classes twice a week on Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 7.15 .a.m  for patients receiving treatment at “The Clinic”.

Back
Gyanyoga
  • Gyan yoga is the yoga of inner search, understanding and wisdom. Gyan Yoga is the highest form of Yoga.
  • This is a very powerful tool for spiritual growth and self realisation. Through the practice of Gyan Yoga you can understand your body, master your mind and experience the Atma and the universe.
  • This form of Yoga is very gentle and based on You becoming aware of your body, understanding your body and helping it to heal.
  • During the process your mind will become still and you will experience your Atma.
  • It helps you experience the beauty of your soul.
  • It brings you back to your soul’s original state happiness and joy.
  • The asanas (position of the body), mudras (position of the hand), dhrishti (position of the eyes), and the breathing (pranayama) work in combination; to help you get in touch with your inner self and experience peace, health and happiness.
  • It is very important that you observe yourself carefully  while doing the yoga asanas. Observe the changes your body and mind are going through.
  • Do each asana 3 times watching my position very carefully and following it exactly to get the results.
  • Note which areas receive more or less air, more or less blood circulation, any feeling of pain or constriction, warmth or coolness, tingling or numbness, which areas are stuck or flexible.
  • Between each set of 3 repetitions rest for 2 minutes with your eyes closed and observe the changes taking place in your body.
  • This rest period gives your body time to heal and the next time you repeat the asana the sensations you feel are likely to be different.

This process regularises your body functions, reduces tension, improves blood circulation, improves oxygenation of the body and promotes your healing and recovery.

Gradually you feel your mind becoming still. You become more aware of the sounds smells and movements around you.

Gradually this too fades away and you enter another state of consciousness. The experiences here do not co-relate with what we already know.

Do not be afraid. Just observe, without seeking to categorise judge or classify what you see through your mind.

As you continue with the yoga, the experiences change, and change again.
  • Take your time with each asana.
  • Focus on doing each asana perfectly as shown.
  • Perfection in technique will give results.
  • Poor technique will not.
  • Doing  one asana perfectly through a session of yoga will give you greater benefits than trying to do too many.
